Cyclone Idai made landfall in southern Africa on Thursday, March 14, impacting Mozambique, Zimbabwe and parts of Malawi. UN officials estimate that severe flooding triggered by the cyclone has affected 1.5 million people in Mozambique and Malawi. Initial assessments in the three countries suggested more than 150 people have been killed, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said. Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said the death toll may be much more severe. While 200 were believed dead in his country, he said, the toll could surpass 1,000.
